Emergency brakes went on before NYC derailment

Passengers wait on a halted with a power outage on an MTA train at 125th station on June 27th 2017

An A train derailment triggered power outages across the subway system this morning, causing injuries to 34 passengers and chaos for straphangers stuck underground, according to news reports. "All of a sudden it was like the train just started like banging against the walls of the tunnel", one passenger told CBS 2 NY.

The chairman of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority says transit officials are investigating why a subway train's emergency brakes went on before a minor Harlem derailment that frightened passengers and resulted in systemwide delays. Witnesses said there was smoke on the tracks.

New York City Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro gave reporters details on the injuries at the scene. He said there was white smoke and "there was a lot of banging around in that vehicle - it was really bad".

The accident was stopped several trains, of which carried out the evacuation of passengers.

"It wasn't heavy smoke, but it was frightening", he said.

"People were going insane and it was very chaotic and traumatizing", said subway rider Jazmil Genao.

He said the station was not smoky, but there was a strong, acrid smell.

A sudden braking caused a train derailment in Harlem, injuring 30 people and causing massive transit disruption.

Israel strikes Syrian positions after fire toward it
The IDF reportedly stressed that it views Damascus as " ultimately responsible for what is happening in its territory ". The last incident came in April, after which the IDF said it struck targets inside Syria.

The South Ferry station opened at noon Tuesday, almost five years after it was flooded by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

"The MTA workers told us that we were lucky enough that two cars had pulled into the station so we wouldn't have to trek through the tracks".

Riders had to use the old station once again during the lengthy repairs to the new one.

She said the A train jerked and began shaking violently as it approached the station.

The number of subway delays have tripled in the past five years, to 70,000 per month.

In April, a power outage backed up trains around the city and closed a key Manhattan station for 12 hours.

Commuter railroads have fared no better.
