SNP's 'Embarrassing' Election Results Behind Scotland Independence Vote Delay

Nicola Sturgeon expected make announcement on indyref2

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed plans for a second referendum on Scottish independence are being put on hold - but added it is still "likely" there could be another ballot before 2021.

The First Minister had previously said in March she wanted to give Scotland another chance to vote on leaving the United Kingdom between autumn 2018 and spring 2019.

But Sturgeon had argued that the Brexit referendum previous year - in which Scotland voted to stay in the European Union but Britain as a whole opted to leave - justified her demand for a second independence vote.

"Indeed, the implications of Brexit are so potentially far-reaching that as they become clearer, I think people will increasingly demand that choice".

"Brexit is going to come to a conclusion as far as we can tell in right now within this parliament".

Today she set out her reflections in a speech to the Scottish Parliament.

She insisted on Tuesday that the Scottish Government "remains committed strongly to the principle of giving Scotland a choice at the end of this process".

However, her plans suffered a setback with a weak performance in the General Election, when the SNP lost 21 seats.

Azerbaijan GP 2017 Qualifying: Hamilton dominates, Ricciardo slips up and Stroll surprises
As we mentioned earlier Valtteri Bottas , will start from the second place , and Kimi Raikkonen will be right behind him. Elsewhere, Daniel Ricciardo was fourth for Red Bull ahead of Force India's Esteban Ocon with Verstappen in sixth.

In the meantime, she said she would "redouble" her efforts to secure the best possible Brexit deal for Scotland. "And as a result, [she] is leaking credibility and confidence in her leadership by the hour".

Ms Sturgeon had been due to give a speech on Brexit to the Association of British Insurers in London but her appearance was cancelled on Tuesday morning.

However, she had been under pressure to put off a new referendum because of her party's weak performance in a national election earlier this month.

Sturgeon's concession is simply that the party no longer plans to call a referendum on Scottish independence "immediately".

Her political opponents say that merely "resetting" the timetable for a referendum rather than taking it off the table shows that Nicola Sturgeon has not properly understood the message sent by voters who don't want another poll anytime soon.

Labour's Kezia Dugdale claimed any real threat of a second referendum was "dead", while Tory MSP Ruth Davidson urged Ms Sturgeon to take the option "off the table" for the remainder of the Parliament.

The SNP Scottish Government has a clear mandate to offer the people of Scotland a choice.

Scotland's First Minister will instead throw her resources into trying to stamp her mark on Britain's Brexit negotiations.
