Bill to replace housing block cladding after Grenfell disaster 'could top £600m'

The Latest: Evacuated London residents express anger, fear

Sixty high-rise buildings in 25 local authority areas have so far failed fire cladding safety checks and 800 homes in Camden were evacuated on Friday due to fears over another potentially fatal blaze.

Around 600 buildings across the country are believed to have similar fire risks, of which at least 20 have been confirmed to have the unsafe and unauthorised cladding. "That is absolutely clear", he told Sky News.

Scotland Yard also revealed manslaughter charges are being considered by detectives investigating the blaze in the tower in west London, which had failed fire safety tests.

"I know it's hard, but Grenfell changes everything, and I just don't believe we can take any risk with our residents' safety and I have to put them first", Gould said, according to the BBC.

Downing Street said last week the 600 tower blocks in England encased in cladding were not necessarily the same type of material as was installed on Grenfell Tower.

British Prime Minister Theresa May had earlier said it is possible for some councils to take "mitigating action" on tower blocks, but in other cases it may be necessary to move people out.

He told me his family were just fed up, that they desperately wanted to go home, but had no idea when that might be. The apartments were evacuated overnight after fi.

The revelation comes as more than 3,000 residents of the Chalcots Estate in Camden, north London, are facing weeks in temporary accommodation after four tower blocks were evacuated.

"They made people panic".

5 London towers being evacuated over fire safety fears: authorities

Meanwhile, London mayor Sadiq Khan backed the Labour-led council's decision to evacuate the four high-rise blocks on the Chalcots Estate, saying: "You can't play Russian roulette with people's safety".

The Camden blocks between 2006 and 2009 were refurbished by the same company that had renovated Grenfell and had the same unsafe cladding.

'I know it's deeply disruptive for them, but the fire service said it wasn't safe to spend a night there.

He later assured the BBC that the Government was "literally working around the clock" to test samples that were being sent in from across the country.

Gould, the Camden council's leader, said it would take up to four weeks to fix the blocks that were evacuated.

"The LGA has a team of staff working closely with councils and the Department for Communities and Local Government around-the-clock to help local authorities as they continue to support communities affected during this hard time.

I would also urge everyone to fit smoke alarms in their homes and test them regularly", he added.

Urgent tests are ongoing in eight areas to check privately owned blocks, but most councils report the aluminium composite material used on Grenfell Tower had not been used.

"As a precautionary measure to ensure the continued safety of our tenants, One Vision Housing have taken the decision to remove the cladding from the two blocks with immediate effect, to allow for further investigations", it added.
