Plane bursts into flames as it crashes on California freeway

Small plane crashes on I-405 at John Wayne Airport

Two people were injured when a small plane crashed onto a busy Southern California freeway Friday morning. The crash occurred on the southbound side of the freeway.

Larry Kurtz said two people in their early 60s were hospitalized with traumatic injuries. They show the plane in flames, emergency teams rushing to the scene, and the plane's passengers after they were evacuated.

The Cessna 310 touched down in traffic lanes just short of the runway at 9:35 a.m., said airport spokeswoman Deanne Thompson.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the plane was trying to return to return to the airport when it fell from the sky and crashed on the freeway. The plane only clipped one vehicle as it crashed on the freeway, an official told ABC7, adding that this was "truly remarkable".

LGB spokeswoman Stephanie Montuya-Morisky said it was not immediately known if any other flights would be redirected to Long Beach.

A small plane crash landed on the 405 Freeway in Santa Ana after taking off from John Wayne Airport, the FAA said, on Friday, June 30, 2017.

The car's driver, who only suffered a bruised elbow, described the frightening incident. The wreckage saw strewn across several lanes of the freeway, he said.

He says two people have been injured and will be taken by helicopter to a hospital.

John Wayne Airport tweeted that the nearby freeway has been closed in both directions "due to debris on the roadway".

A passer-by shared a photo of the crash with his followers on Twitter.
