What is Kate's Law? The Immigration Legislation Could Alter US Policy

House cracks down on illegal immigrant crime with two BIG votes

President Donald Trump's push to create "Kate's Law", named after the San Francisco woman inexplicably shot dead by an illegal immigrant, has been passed by the House - but in a watered-down version bound to disappoint the commander-in-chief. "There are more than 140 jurisdictions and six states actively obstructing enforcement of federal immigration laws with sanctuary policies", Roby said.

Some groups that favor less immigration were disappointed that lawmakers weren't taking up the Davis-Oliver Act, a more comprehensive enforcement bill that has already been approved by the House Judiciary Committee.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told reporters earlier this week that the bill's aim of cracking down on state and local governments for releasing illegal immigrants earlier than officially permitted would make the jobs of local law enforcement more hard. Goodnow also said that even if the law were passed, its fight would be "far from over".

Kate's Law is so named for Kate Steinle, a 32-year-old woman who was allegedly shot and killed by a Mexican national in San Francisco, a sanctuary city, almost two years ago.

Kate's Law increases penalties simply for re-entering the country after being deported, and gives greater punishments to people who have committed violent crimes or nonviolent crimes.

"You lost the people that you love because our government refused to enforce our nation's immigration laws, and that's including the existing immigration laws", Trump told the family members gathered in the White House Cabinet room.

The 2018 budget proposed by the White House calls for $1.6 billion for constructing the wall.

Oil Gains on Hopes for Falling Stocks
U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices were trading 1.23 per cent higher at $43.54 per barrel this morning. News from other markets show, an increase of 63 cents to $15.42 was observed in shares of Home Capital Group.

Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and House Republicans hold a press conference on Kate's Law and the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act.

A separate measure would strip federal dollars from "sanctuary" cities that shield residents from federal immigration authorities. Those grants would in-turn be redistributed to cooperating jurisdictions. The bill increases mandatory penalties for illegal aliens who re-enter the USA after being deported.

The legislation seeks to make sure local law enforcement with sanctuary city protections for criminal illegal aliens are properly turning over those individuals to federal authorities. The city continues to refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

Goodlatte is considered a staunch opponent of illegal immigration and is supportive of the Trump administration's concerted efforts to prevent unauthorized persons from entering the U.S. Steinle was shot and killed on a pier in San Francisco, which is a sanctuary city. They now go to the Senate for consideration.

House Republicans pushed back on the anti-immigrant narrative, portraying the bills throughout the week as a way to crack down on criminals and local governments that protect them. An illegal immigrant from Honduras, Edwin Mejia, is wanted for motor vehicle homicide in the case, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The House of Representatives passed two immigration-related bills on Thursday that aim to curb unauthorized immigration through tougher penalties and by putting financial pressure on local police departments.

House Republicans praised the passage of two bills aimed at cracking down on sanctuary cities Thursday, saying they believe the changes are necessary to ensure the safety of American citizens. It is a bait-and-switch strategy: "use a disgusting tragedy to sell a policy that would not have prevented that death, so that you put more immigrants in jail for longer periods of time".
