Xi urges G20 to continue championing open world economy

Merkel criticizes Trump trade policy before G20

As anti-globalisation activists took to the streets in Hamburg ahead of this week's G20 summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday leaders will have to focus on sustainable and inclusive economic growth rather than their own prosperity.

The gathering of the leaders from the world's 20 main economies will mark the first time Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have met since the USA presidential election.

The two-day meeting is of particular significance as the U.S. President Donald Trump will not only make his debut at his first meeting, he is also set to meet numerous world leaders for the first time at the G20.

It pledges support for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation but says that Europe has to take greater responsibility for its own defense.

The G20 meeting follows a G7 summit in Sicily a month ago that exposed deep divisions between other Western countries and Trump on climate change, trade and migration.

"While we seek chances to cooperate for everyone's benefit, globalization is seen in the American administration as a process which isn't about win-win situations, but about winners and losers", she said.

Europe must pool its energy, she said, adding that ideas of an economic government for the euro zone and of a European finance minister, put forward by new French President Emmanuel Macron, were "two important thoughts".

Cristiano Ronaldo closes in on Puskas' record
Portugal drew their first game 2-2 against Mexico, although wins over Russian Federation and New Zealand saw them top Group A . Chile's biggest strength lie in their two most famous players, Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal .

With the Elbe River and the Alster River flowing across the city, Hamburg has demonstrated its spirit that echoes that of the G20 summit: to build a interconnected world.

Merkel first said in May that Europe needs to take its fate in its own hands, stating that "the times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out..." But the G20 meeting in Hamburg next week will be different.

Officials have said as many as 8,000 demonstrators, including many intent on violence, are likely to converge on the city for the two-day summit.

About 20,000 police will be deployed to ensure the security of the summit.

In the conversation with Abe, the White House said both leaders were united on increasing pressure on North Korea to "change its risky path" and the United States and Japan are ready to respond to "any threat or action taken by North Korea".

She reiterated that the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord was "extraordinarily regrettable".
