Trump 'absolutely' committed to making Mexico pay for border wall

President Trump met with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto Friday and said Mexico should "absolutely" pay for Trump's proposed border wall to contain the flow of illegal immigrants, Bloomberg reported.

The meeting was the first between the two leaders since last August, in the heat of the campaign season.

In a radio interview, Mexico's foreign minister, Luis Videgaray, described the meeting as "friendly and respectful" and said the wall was not discussed. "But I think we made very good progress", Trump said.

Despite an agreement between the leaders of Mexico and the United States that a border wall would no longer be the subject of public discussion by them, U.S. President Donald Trump today repeated earlier claims that Mexico would pay for the wall.

"I've said time again; Mexico will not pay for any wall", the Mexican president said in a video statement posted to Twitter and translated by CNN from Spanish in January.

Trump Meets Mexico's President in Hamburg, Says They Should 'Absolutely' Pay for the Border Wall

Estimates say the border barrier will cost billions of dollars. President Trump has also received skepticism from his own supporters regarding his lack of progress on the wall, as bids to build the wall are still now under review.

In fact, Mr Videgaray added, Mr Peña Nieto didn't even hear the President's photo-op comment.

Mexico has repeatedly refused to pay for a wall along its 2,000-mile wide border with the US, which is just one of the issues putting strain on US-Mexican relations. The two spoke on the phone instead, but agreed they would not speak publicly about the wall at the time.

Peña Nieto said he hoped the conversation would "contribute to having a fluid dialogue, which will permit us to advance in the renegotiation of what will the the free trade agreement".

Trump looked to downplay the appearance of tension in their brief encounter on Friday, calling Pena Nieto a "friend".
