Trump's choice for Federal Bureau of Investigation director netted $9.2m from law firm

FBI Director nominee Christopher Wray meets with Sen. Chuck Grassley R-Iowa in his office on Capitol Hill in Washington

Wray's task Wednesday was to convince the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will vote to send his nomination to the full Senate for approval, that he would rather get fired than bend to political pressure.

Earlier, Graham read aloud from some of the emails released Tuesday by Donald Trump Jr.in which the president's son agreed to meet with a Russian government attorney who, Don Jr. was told, had damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

"And in fact when I made a decision to just do it I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should've won, '" Trump told Holt. The position is vacant only because James Comey was sacked over the FBI's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign and associates.

He also said Mr Trump had encouraged him to end an investigation into the former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Mr Comey had also told senators he was anxious about meeting one-on-one with Mr Trump, because he was concerned the president might lie later about their discussion. "And no one asked me for any kind of loyalty oath at any point during this process, and I sure as heck didn't offer one", Wray said.

Former colleagues and friends describe Mr. Wray as a low-key straight shooter who is unafraid to take on tough cases.

"I will never allow the FBI's work to be driven by anything other than the facts, the law, and the impartial pursuit of justice".

Lindsay Graham asked, "that you're stepping into the role of Federal Bureau of Investigation director during one of the most contentious times in American politics?"

Tony Martin continues racing at Tour de France with concussion
With Slovak Sagan disqualified, Norway's Alexander Kristoff came second and Greipel third. The world champion was also docked 80 points from his green jersey total.

Mateja also told IJR he thought it was odd that Trump picked someone like Wray to replace Comey.

King & Spalding has also been scrutinized for their representation of Russian interests amid allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government during the 2016 election.

But some Democrats remain concerned about some of his work in George W. Bush's Justice Department, and pressed him on how much he knew about Bush-era torture memos, which he said he hadn't played a role in. Speaking of Wray, Grassley said, "He's prosecuted folks on both sides of the political spectrum, including folks working on a Republican campaign".

But before any votes take place, Wray will have to face a series of questions about his background - and his backbone. But lawyers there said Wray had no involvement with those Russian clients.

Mr. Trump announced his intent to nominate Wray in a June 7 tweet, but officially nominated him at the end of last month.

Wray said he's not up to speed on DNA technology but would favor something that helps ensure the right people are prosecuted and the wrong people are not.

"I can't imagine a situation where I would give a press conference on an uncharged individual", he said.

Additionally, Wray listed three "confidential clients" whose "names can not be disclosed because they are subject to non-public investigations". He was assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's criminal division, and was unanimously confirmed by the Senate for that.
