Maryam Mirzakhani Cause Of Death: How Did The Fields Medalist Die?

Maryam Mirzakhani

Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the Fields Medal for mathematics, has died, according to the BBC.

Three years later, the Iranian math prodigy died on Saturday of cancer in a US hospital.

Mirzakhani was born in Tehran, Iran on May 3, 1977, and she quickly displayed an awesome talent for math. Her paper "Growth of the number of simple closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces", she investigated the growth rate of the number of simple closed geodesics, as a function of their length, following her PhD entitled "Simple geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces and the volume of the moduli space of curves" on 2004 at Harvard University. The Stanford University math professor was the first woman to ever win the prestigious Fields Medal, and we've got the latest report on the sad news.

The president further expressed condolences to the country's scientific community and the bereaved family of Mirzakhani over her death.

Mirzakhani said mathematics made her feel like a detective. "It breaks my heart... gone far too soon", she wrote. "Maryam was a brilliant mathematical theorist, and also a humble person who accepted honors only with the hope that it might encourage others to follow her path".

"You're torturing yourself along the way", she would offer, "but life isn't supposed to be easy".

"The more I spent time on mathematics, the more excited I became", she told The Guardian.

"It's like being lost in a jungle and trying to use all the knowledge that you can gather to come up with some new tricks, and with some luck you might find a way out", she added. She then taught at Princeton University before moving to Stanford in 2008. She said in interviews that she liked the interdisciplinary connections and implications of her work.

Mirzakhani, who described herself as a slow mathematician, was drawn to big, hard questions in her field, a trait that made her a revered figure within the mathematics community. Kerckhoff is a mathematics professor at Stanford and was one of Mirzakhani's collaborators.

She was survived by her husband Jan Vondrák, a Czech theoretical computer scientist and her colleague at Stanford University and a daughter named Anahita.
