Wesley Matthews / Utah Jazz 7 day countdown
After the Utah Jazz offered Wesley Matthews plenty of opportunity when he was an undrafted rookie the Jazz got their unwelcome reward when the Portland Trail Blazers signed Matthews to a $34 million offer sheet for five years.
The Jazz have seven days to take the offer, which they are expected to receive on Monday, and decide if they want to match the offer so that they can keep Matthews, who was the starter of 48 games with an average of 9.4 points.
Matthews’ agent, Lance Young, stated that he can play anywhere and simply loves to play with the intention of winning. Young said Portland came after him and they had to take a moment to listen.
His offer with Portland is basically the max contract for a player in free agency after their rookie season given that the signed Matthews to a deal that includes the exception of $5.765 million plus annual raises.
In addition, Young stated that the contract offers front-loading and maximum signing bonuses as the NBA salary rules allowed it.
The Jazz would thus have to make a $9.2 million upfront payment to the rookie within a week if they want him.
