Unemployment Benefits Extension- will benefit 150,000 Texans

President Barack Obama signed a new piece of legislation that should benefit the 2.5 million people who lost their jobs as a result of the recession, and are long term unemployed.

The new legislation, titled the Tier 5 Unemployment Extension benefit, is valued at $34 billion and will offer extended benefits for those that are jobless.

In Texas, about 150,000 jobless are expected to benefit who have not received checks since back in June.  Spokeswoman for the Texas Workforce Commission, Ann Hatchitt, stated that they have been asking all those who qualify to continue filling out payment requests so that as soon as the bill was passed, those who qualify and are still unemployed can be immediately helped.

Ray Perryman, the Waco economist, stated that while the move will not immediately help the Texas economy, there are many people who have been out of work for some time and it is these families that will be helped out the most.  He added that they have seen job growth in sectors such as minerals, manufacturing, and construction.

    This was not Tier 5.
